Ford Mustang
April 17, 1964 launched the Ford Mustang and the history of the American automobile was forever changed. The Mustang sold 22,000 units in the first day which is a record that still stands today. Two years after its introduction, more than 1,000,000 Mustangs had been built and the Pony Car was here to stay. From June 1964 and up to model year 1967 the 289 ci V8's (Windsor and "k-code" high performance) were the most powerful engine options available and because the cars were so light weight they moved pretty well. In 1967 the Mustang saw its first real competition, the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. Ford Motor Company antied up in 1967 with the 390 ci "FE Big Block" V8. The only drawback was that in order to accomodate the 390 the Mustang had to grow and unfortunately it was not enough to stave off the 396 ci that was available in the GM Pony Cars. Ford did not take this temporary set back lightly and in 1968 introduced the legendary 428 ci "Cobra Jet". One year later Ford added the BOSS 302 and BOSS 429 for good measure. 14 second or better 1/4 mile runs became common on street drag strips across the country and the Ford/GM Pony Car fued was in full swing.
Until we write more in depth about each model year from 1964 through 1973,
